KLC offers a one year men’s residential home for those struggling with addiction. Manipur borders Myanmar and the Golden triangle, which is world’s second largest illicit opium producing region. The easy availability of opium has resulted in an extremely high rate of Drug addiction & HIV in the region. Manipur has the one of the world’s highest prevalence of HIV among injection drug users.
History: In 2004, a group of men struggling with addiction came to Bangalore Life Challenge. There was a great need for a Life Challenge Program in Manipur, a region steeped in addiction. The first Addiction Awareness Seminar was held in Kakching, Manipur. Local community leaders formed a Development Committee and in 2005 an outreach center was started to recruit men to Bangalore. The Committee then identified an abandoned government building (that was earlier used as a ‘drug-house’) as a potential facility to start a Life Challenge residential home. The government provided the facility and renovation work was started on the building.
In 2006, Kakching Life Challenge, a 20 bed men’s residential home was opened.
